Dear colleagues and students:

With sadness, we write to share the news that Hayden White, a retired member of our Department of Comparative Literature and one of the leading figures in twentieth-century historiography, passed away yesterday. Hayden is warmly remembered in Pigott Hall for his restless and open mind, his encouragement of younger scholars and students, and his personal charm. We will pass along information about a memorial event.
