Occultism's rediscovery of the 鈥渟oul鈥 is characterized by a fundamental ambivalence towards modernity: Occultism rejected the positivistic results of modern science, but it adapted several of its claims, methods and techniques. This lecture will investigate this ambivalence with reference to the development and application of media technology in occultist thinking about the soul. By claiming to make the invisible visible, these occultist media-technologies serve 鈥 so to speak 鈥 as soul machines or spirit apparatuses.
