Lecture by Marcelo Jasmin: 'History of Concepts, Political Languages and Action: Some Interpretations of Brazilian History'
Marcelo Jasmin, Professor, Department of History at Pontif铆cia Universidade Cat贸lica do Rio de Janeiro(PUC-Rio) and Graduate Program in Political Science at Instituto Universit谩rio de Pesquisa do Rio de Janeiro (IUPERJ).
Professor Jasmin holds a BA in History from the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro and Masters and Ph.D. degrees in Political Science from Instituto Universit谩rio de Pesquisa do Rio de Janeiro (IUPERJ). He works on the history of political thought and philosophy of history. His academic publications include Alexis de Tocqueville: a Historiografia como Ci锚ncia da Pol铆tica (1997); Racionalidade e Hist贸ria na Teoria Pol铆tica (1998); Modernas tradi莽玫es. Percursos da Cultura Ocidental (2002) with B. Cavalcante, J. Kamita, and S. Patuzzi; Hist贸ria dos Conceitos: Debates e Perspectivas (2006) with J. Feres. His recent articles examine theoretical relationships between history, political interpretation and action. He is a Visiting Scholar at the Department Iberian and Latin American Cultures at 麻豆高清 University.
Abstract:
In this talk, Professor Jasmin will address
the
non-representational aspects of basic concepts, such as
history or
capitalism, and the ways in which traditions of modern
thought could
find rational foundation of political action in
history understood as a
directional oriented process. He will
examine twentieth-century
authoritarian interpretations of
Brazilian history that provided the
political language which
justified the creation of the Estado Novo.
