Abstract:
This lecture
shall discuss Fernando Pessoa鈥檚 heteronymic
venture as an attempt
to elude or at least to control 鈥淒ecadence鈥 鈥撯 the
鈥渢otal loss of
unconsciousness鈥 resulting from one鈥檚 search for
originality.
Becoming aware of Decadence signals a turn in one鈥檚 life as
a
reader and thenceforth, Pessoa suggests, reading becomes a 鈥渟lavish
sort of dreaming鈥. 鈥淚f I must dream, why not my own dreams?鈥 was
Pessoa鈥檚 personal declaration of war against it, forecasting his
own
turn to a mature reader around 1914 or so, the year he
presumably met
his 鈥淢aster Caeiro鈥. Alberto Caeiro (鈥渉e who
whitewashes all鈥) and his
pagan discipleship put forth a reaction
against Decadence, daring to
perform a sort of rectification of
Life. Yet the neopagans鈥 cultural
description of Decadence as a
鈥渄egeneracy of ideas鈥 at the same time
depicts their Master 鈥撯
the 鈥淕reat Vaccine鈥 鈥撯 as an inspiration fading
away, suggesting
that the cure for Decadence, alas, is more Decadence.
