Come celebrate la Diada de Sant Jordi (St. George's Day) with us on Wednesday, April 23!
At 12:00 PM, Joan Fontcuberta, conceptual artist, photographer, curator, and essayist whose work explores the truthfulness of photography, will join us from Catalunya to give a talk titled “Photography: From Alchemy to the Algorithm.” You can attend the talk in Room 216 at Pigott Hall
"Photography was founded in the mystery of alchemy and has come to rest in a different magic, that of algorithms. At the beginning, photography was made with light and chemical reactions. Today it is made with computational processing of data. When the camera and the eye are replaced at the core of visual culture by neural networks and Artificial Intelligence, it is necessary to reconsider the role of images that hitherto mediated between the subject and the world and contributed to shaping human sensibility."
The talk will be followed by a reception at Oregon Courtyard starting at 5:00 PM, featuring poetry, roses, a selection of Catalan and Spanish food with roses for everyone!
Also known as the Day of the Rose or the Day of the Book, or the Day of Books and Roses, exchanging roses and books with loved ones and colleagues is the most cherished tradition to celebrate this day full of love in Catalunya. To honor the literary spirit of the day, we’ll host an open mic, and you are warmly invited to recite poetry in any language you love!
We look forward to seeing you all there!
