Punning off the phrase 鈥belle de nuit鈥 meaning 鈥渨oman of the night,鈥 Bu帽uel鈥檚 hit surrealist film Belle de Jour depicts the fantasy-driven relationship of a young wife, S茅verine (Catherine Deneuve), who prostitutes herself in the afternoons while her husband, Pierre, (Jean Sorel) is at work. The film recounts S茅v茅rine鈥檚 descent into the lifestyle of the brothel, which somehow seems to strengthen her marriage at home鈥攁t least until the boundaries between night and day and fantasy and reality become mixed. Known for its sadomasochistic themes, vivid colors, and Bu帽uel's classic surrealist aesthetic, Belle de Jour is Bu帽uel鈥檚 most popular surrealist work.
