A foundational film in Brazil鈥檚 cinema novo movement, Black God, White Devil is the story of Manuel (Gerardo del Rey) and his wife Rosa (Yon谩 Magalh茫es), who become outlaws after Manuel kills his boss. They join up with Ant么nio das Mortes (Maur铆cio do Valle), a messianic figure, and roam the Brazilian backlands in search of meaning and of destiny. In a blend of mysticism, religion and popular culture, Rocha created this austere film and it became one of Brazil鈥檚 most influential films, a symbolic drama of self-discovery portraying a solitary group exploring geographic and spiritual frontiers.
